Time to Pray

by Tracy Johnson, OHM Executive Director

“We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there’s nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.”
― Oswald Chambers

In January 2015 we were preparing for our first Regional Journey in San Antonio, Texas when I had a conversation with Betty Lee  (a long time leader for Open Hearts in Cleburne, Texas).  “Tracy, I want to come to pray for the seminar.”

Her offer to come and pray was a sweet gift from heaven and I was thrilled.  That week Betty and the seminar Lead Team gathered to pray.  We sat in circles, walked the halls of the hotel, and gathered two at a time.  We prayed for every participant by name and for each leader and coach by name as well.  We prayed at the end of each large group session as everyone was heading off to their small groups.  For those of us not in groups that week it fostered a sense of connection and belonging to what was happening, we knew that our prayers were helping to uphold the work being done in the small groups.

Praying is not something new for Open Hearts Ministry, certainly this ministry has been bathed in prayer for over twenty-five years, still we are purposing to invite the OHM community to join together in prayer in some new ways. The pattern of having a prayer team at each of The Journey seminars is something we carried forward from last year to this and it will remain a key component as we continue into the coming years as well.  At our Leader Training Weekends the Lead Team members who are not leading groups pray in the same way each day for the participants and the leaders. And, I am excited to invite you to consider how you may want to step into the next new thing we are working on for our prayer ministry.

The Open Hearts Ministry Prayer Network is something newly forming this month.  We are looking for people who feel called by God to step into helping us form the network and begin offering intentional ways to pray for OHM leaders and participants worldwide.  If you are feel God nudging you towards helping us we would love to hear from you.

As we work to get the OHM Prayer Network up and running you can join us right now in praying for the upcoming Regional Journey in Atlanta.  Currently we are almost full with people coming from across the country to participate. Pray for those preparing to come and for those yet to register.  Please pray too for the leaders as they prepare their own hearts.  And finally, as always your prayers for those of us in leadership the staff, the OHM Board and the Lead Team are always greatly appreciated.

I am looking forward to what this coming year holds as we join together in more intentional prayer for the OHM community and the work God is doing through this ministry.

FOR MANY YEARS MY HUSBAND AND I WERE INVOLVED IN MARRIAGE WEEKENDS IN GRAND RAPIDS, MI. I FELT STRONGLY AND CONNECTED WHEN i WAS A PART OF CHAPEL, PRAYING IN GENERAL, FOR INDIVIDUALS, AND PRAYING FOR PRAYER INTENTIONS WRITTEN BY PARTICIPANTS.

I’M A PART OF WOMAN’S MINISTRY IN MY CHURCH, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN INVESTED IN THE PROGRAMS CURRENTLY GOING ON. i FEEL A DEEP CALL, AND FEAR OF GOD’S PROMPTING, TO MEET WOMEN IN MY CHURCH WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH THE THROWS OF ABUSE.

I participated in a small group Open Hearts Program at Sunshine Church in Grand Rapids, MI. It helped move me toward healing.
